Audacity is an open-source freeware program that you can use to work with sound.  I’ve used it now for about 4 years and I find it is my “swiss army knife” of audio tools.  It’s simple, yet very powerful.  You can use it for podcasting, recording audio from the internet, modifying sounds files, saving files as different types, and a host of other great features.
